Social Services

Our Mission

Strengthening communities by providing support, education, and personal case planning to promote and encourage self-sufficiency.

As a Community Action Agency, Douglas County Social Services (DCSS) offers supportive services to county residents in need of assistance.

Through individualized case planning and goal setting, this support can be in the form of assistance with completing applications, referrals to other agencies, screening for additional services, job search assistance, and asset-building workshops. With this approach, individuals and families can expect to be empowered with the tools and support necessary to regain self sufficiency.

If You are in Need of Assistance

We ask that you schedule an appointment so that the appropriate amount of time can be allotted to your needs. In most cases we will also require that a current DCSS application is on file.

DCSS is a provider/processor/intake site for temporary utility programs such as the Energy Assistance Program (EAP), SAFESHARE/Friends In Service Helping (FISH), etc. Utility assistance is available no more than once per year per household.

We are the primary entry to and provide eligibility evaluation for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet Voucher Program.

Our Guidelines

Douglas County Social Services is a Community Action Agency, mandated by state law and funded by tax dollars, as well as local, state, and federal grants. Guidelines for eligibility for assistance to the county's residents are set by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and our funders.  DCSS prohibits discrimination against any person due to race, color, religion, age, sex, disability, national origin, marital status, sexual orientation, or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability.
